West Seattle Garage Community Garage Sale 5/11 9am-3pm

WSCGSThe Post will be making available 15 tables to the community for $5 each; while we participate in the West Seattle Community Garage Sale (WSCGS). The VFW will have two tables as well as the American Legion.

If you are unfamiliar with the WSCGS, it is an annual event that the West Seattle Blog hosts to bring the community together in “a fun way to encourage people to get out and meet each other — either by hosting a sale and inviting buyers to come by, or by heading out to check out the sales around town.”

They “plan to have the printable map ready for download/printing (and a clickable online version, too) no later than one week before sale day. Watch WSB on the Web, onFacebook, on Twitter, and West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day on Facebook and the Web (westseattlegaragesale.com) for notification of that.”

If you would like to rent a table please fill out the form below.

Regards,

Commander Sullivan

We will be setting up around 2:30 PM. My understanding is youth and adult Military teams are going to be playing 3p-5p prior to the Seattle U game that begins at 7 PM.

I think this is a great opportunity to do something in the Seattle area for veterans.

Please let me know if you want to attend. Tickets are limited.

The War Experience Project

From an email sent to the post:

To My Fellow Veterans,

My name is Rick Lawson. I am a service-disabled Iraq War veteran reaching out to ask for your support of my upcoming talk that will take place on Saturday October 20th from 1:30 – 2:30pm at 411 Union St. in Seattle. This talk will be about my experience returning from my deployment to Iraq, and my frustration returning to a society where people ask questions like “Did you ever kill anyone?” or “Did you ever see anyone die?”. I will explain how these types of questions led me to become more reclusive in an attempt to avoid having to interact with people who just don’t get it (those who haven’t served). Most importantly though, I will talk about how I found a way, through art, to build a conversation between the military and civilian communities that I and many other veterans could not and cannot have through words. I hope you will be able to come, and show your support as a veteran, because these kinds of discussions are important and as you know, they can be difficult to have. The talk will last 20-30 minutes with the remainder of the hour opened up for discussion between and among those in the audience and myself. I hope you will consider participating and sharing something!

The War Experience Project “inFORMATION”, is an art exhibit of military-veteran painted uniforms I began in 2008 after realizing that the uniform is what those who haven’t served don’t understand. They do not understand the committment and sacrifice that goes into that service, nor the continued burden that we carry as veterans for the rest of our lives whether we have seen “combat” or not. This is why I decided the uniform was what I wanted to tell my story through, and have been asking other veterans to do the same, in what has now become a sizeable collective art exhibit made by those who served. Additionally, family members, friends, and everyone from the community can participate by painting a quilting square which is then sewn into a garment bag to protect the uniforms as they travel in exhibition. This is an important discussion being started using art as the catalyst! I hope you will be able to attend!

Sincerely,

Rick Lawson

One Less Mountain Benefit for Veterans

“I’m not a veteran, but I value their contribution and want to do something that helps them out,” local entrepreneur PJ Glassey explained, when we asked him about an upcoming benefit he’s promoting for a new veterans-assistance group. “Veterans are the reason we are still a free country. While we all may not agree with all the various wars we get involved with, we can all agree that our soldiers are serving us to the point of risking their lives and that means a lot to me.”

The show Glassey – son of a Vietnam veteran as well as owner of X-Gym on Harbor Avenue- is promoting is coming up June 16th atYoungstown Cultural Arts Center in North Delridge, a “hypnosis/comedy” performance by Joe Black. Glassey says, “This event is kind of a ‘kickoff’ for the brand-new organization One Less Mountain, which helps veterans when they get home so they can cope, make the transition to civilian life and find the resources needed to make that switch.
